EHC Police Dept. Update

 Excerpts

EGG HARBOR CITY — The Police Department instituted several reforms — such as locking away unused guns and clearing mold from an evidence room — after an Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office report called the department dysfunctional, Lt. Dylan Hutton said.
But there are still major issues from the spring report to be addressed in the 10-member department, said Hutton, who took over the duties of police chief after former Chief John McColgan filed papers to retire.

“We’re working to rebuild our Police Department,” Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti said. “The transition to (new Atlantic County Prosecutor) Diane Ruberton was very smooth. I met with her staff two weeks ago and she was very up-to-date on everything.”
Ruberton declined to comment on any specific reforms that have been implemented, but said her office is continuing to monitor the Police Department.
Jiampetti said she has requested help from the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department. The city has asked for police assistance before, but this is the first time under her administration.

Reforms overall have been difficult since the department is understaffed, Hutton said. Police would ideally like five more officers, he said.
Hutton goes on patrol and works as an officer while performing the duties of chief.
Hutton said two new officers are currently in the academy and will join the Police Department in January. After that, they will be in training with senior officers for three months before being able to patrol the street.

In a personnel move, Mayor Lisa Jiampetti swore in Pat Moran, former chief of police in Galloway Township, as the administrative assistant in the Police Department.
