Atlantic City Considers Bankruptcy

TRENTON — With the threat of a state takeover looming, Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian and Council President Marty Small announced Wednesday that the city's elected officials will consider bankruptcy at an emergency council meeting.

Guardian will call for the special meeting today and it will take place sometime next week, they said.

Despite the financial benefits, Guardian said bankruptcy would be bad for Atlantic City, Atlantic County and New Jersey. For the city, it would be bad publicity as a destination resort. For the county, its 11 percent share of the Borgata tax refunds — about $17 million — would be due immediately. And for the state, “everybody that does bonding is going to be afraid to bond with a municipality in New Jersey,” Guardian said.
