A Hammonton resident was arrested today on charges he set fire to a Mullica Township house that sustained more than $150,000 worth of damage, Mullica Township police announced Friday.

Christopher E. Smith, 31, was charged with aggravated arson and criminal mischief in connection with the fire at a home on Heidelberg Avenue.
Police allege Smith set fire to the home because of a domestic dispute there Wednesday morning. Smith was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Mullica Township Committee Candidates, 2014

Democrat Jean Gallagher
Republican Chris Silva

— The two candidates running for one open seat on the Mullica Township Committee both say raising revenue without overly burdening taxpayers is the main challenge facing local government.
They also both have experience with budgeting and finances, they said.

Republican Chris Silva, 61, a retired Little Egg Harbor Township police captain and now owner of a company that designs and installs communications equipment for airports and industrial entities, said he would focus on bringing commercial ratables to the township.
“The main challenge right now is obtaining more outside sources of funding, like grants ... and trying to attract clean commercials into the town,” Silva said. “We need to have a commercial base to help offset rising costs of health insurance, salaries, and everything.”
He said he would rather bring in some commercial ratables, rather than housing that would add children to the school district.
“I don’t see any big benefit in getting a greater population. It defeats the purpose (by costing more to educate more children) and the reason people are attracted to this area,” Silva said of the rural nature of the town.

Democrat Jean Gallagher, 49, is a first-grade teacher at Mullica Elementary School. She is a former CPA who previously worked as an Atlantic City casino controller and internal audit director, and said she would focus on the budget process.
“I would be very analytical and conservative in budgeting,” she said. “We really need to be cognizant about not putting additional burdens on taxpayers.”
She said she would need to study further the idea of bringing commercial ratables in, particularly if a small packet sewer plant would need to be built to service businesses on the White Horse Pike.
“You always have to balance the growth with the demands you are going to put on community services,” Gallagher said, “and whether there are any hidden costs for us as residents.”

Silva, who is not related to Mullica Township Police Officer Chris Silva, said he would support such a plant in order to bring some business to the township.

A widower, Silva has two adult children and two grandchildren who attend Mullica schools. He has lived in Mullica about 10 years, he said.
He retired from the police force in Little Egg Harbor in 2003, after settling 4-year legal dispute with the township over disciplinary charges that an administrative law judge called politically motivated. Terms were not disclosed.

Gallagher, who is married to Andrew Schlee, has two daughters, one in eighth grade in Mullica and one a senior at Cedar Creek High School in Egg Harbor City. She has lived in the township 21 years, she said.

MULLICA TWP. - One person was hospitalized after a fire tore through a Mullica Township home Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the intersection of Moss Mill Road and Heidelberg Avenue to find the house in flames and smoke coming from the roof.

Officials say there were no fire hydrants in the rural neighborhood, and firefighters were forced to bring in tankers to fight the blaze.

One person was taken to the hospital for what authorities are calling only minor injuries.

The home suffered extensive damage and fire officials say it will likely be a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters in Mullica Township were extinguishing a blaze at a home on Heidelberg Avenue this afternoon.
A witness took photos on a cell phone showing flames poking through the roof and smoke billowing from the windows of the home, which resembles a log cabin.
Firefighters appeared to have the fire under control before 2 p.m.
The home was nestled in the woods near a rural intersection of Heidelberg Avenue and Moss Mill Road.
Brian O’Shea was visiting his grandfather nearby when he smelled smoke and, shortly later, saw a man on the porch yelling to call 911.
“He was trying to put it out with a garden hose. It wasn’t happening,” said O’Shea, of Absecon.

N.J. 90% Ready For PARCC Tests In 2015

Acting state Education Commissioner David Hespe told school board members from across the state Tuesday that 90 percent of New Jersey districts are ready for the new computer-based state tests in 2015.

“And I believe we will get the last 10 percent,” he told attendees at the annual New Jersey School Boards Conference at the Atlantic City Convention Center, asking them to have the courage to see the process through.

Hespe acknowledged that there is apprehension about the new PARCC tests based on the Common Core State Standards, but he said testing is crucial to gathering data needed to improve education for all students today and into the future.

New NY & NJ Ebola Policy

In a major new state policy for New York and New Jersey, Governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie announced a mandatory quarantine for people returning to the U.S. through area airports who are deemed "high risk."

"We have informed the CDC of our intention and they have agreed that states have the right to establish their own guidelines" with regards to Ebola, Cuomo said.

A health care worker arriving from Africa who was placed in mandatory quarantine as part of a new policy by the governors of New York and New Jersey has developed a fever.

The state health department said the woman had no symptoms upon arrival at Newark Liberty Airport, but on Friday night she developed the fever and is now in isolation and being evaluated at University Hospital in Newark.

1st Case Of Ebola In N.Y.

The mayor said Thursday there's no reason for residents to be alarmed by the doctor's Ebola diagnosis. He said all city officials followed "clear and strong" protocols in their handling and treatment of Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders.
Spencer, 33, had been working in Guinea. He returned more than a week ago and reported Thursday coming down with a 103-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which will do a further test to confirm the initial results, has dispatched an Ebola response team to New York, and the city's disease detectives have been tracing the doctor's contacts to identify anyone who may be at risk. The city's health commissioner, Mary Bassett, said Spencer's fiancee and two friends had been quarantined.

City officials say Spencer acknowledged riding the subway and taking a cab to a Brooklyn bowling alley in the past week before he started showing symptoms.

His Harlem apartment was cordoned off, and his fiancee, who was not showing symptoms, was being watched in a quarantine ward at Bellevue. The Department of Health was on site across the street from the apartment building Thursday night, giving out information to area residents.

According to a rough timeline provided by city officials, Spencer's symptoms developed Wednesday, prompting him to isolate himself in his apartment. When he felt worse Thursday, he and his fiancee made a joint call to authorities to detail his symptoms and his travels. EMT's in full Ebola gear arrived and took him to Bellevue in an ambulance surrounded by police squad cars

Stockton College Negotiating To Buy A Casino

Richard Stockton College is negotiating to buy one of two shuttered Boardwalk casinos to create a new campus in Atlantic City for 10,000 students, Mayor Don Guardian disclosed Wednesday.

Speaking at an economic forum in Burlington County, Guardian said Stockton is looking at the former Atlantic Club and Showboat casino hotels as part of expansion plans outside the college’s main campus in Galloway Township.
“They were looking for a new campus for 10,000 students, and we were able to convince them that Atlantic City is the location,” Guardian said. “So in the next couple of weeks, you’ll see they’re either going to end up with the Atlantic Club, which means all the property in that section of town will become the college district, or they’re going to end up with Showboat, in which case the Southeast Inlet is going to become a district. They’re looking at 10,000 students, four undergraduate schools, four graduate schools.”

HSD Orders 5 Airports Only For Anyone From Countries Reporting Ebola

WASHINGTON - (AP) - The Homeland Security Department is requiring that anyone coming to the United States from one of three West African countries reporting an Ebola outbreak must enter the country through one of five airports screening passengers for the deadly disease.
Customs and Border Protection officers earlier this month started screening passengers from West Africa who arrived at Newark Liberty, New York's Kennedy, Washington's Dulles, Chicago's O'Hare and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airports.
There are no direct flights from West Africa to the United States and about 94 percent of the estimated 150 daily passengers from the region pass through those five airports.
More Ebola Stories | Airport Screening Info
The new requirement means that people traveling from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea who were not originally passing through one of those five airports will have to rebook their flights.

Starbucks - Win Free Coffee for 30 years

Best holiday gift ever?
Starbucks is offering drinks for life to 10 customers.
Technically, the offer is not "for life" but for a free drink or food item every day for 30 years.
Customers become eligible for the giveaway by using a Starbucks Card or by paying through a mobile device.
The contest is a way for the company to promote its new order and pay ahead mobile program, which is scheduled to launch by the end of next year. Starbucks is offering the program early -- before the end of this year -- in Portland.
"This is the first time we ever offered customers something of this magnitude," said Sharon Rothstein, Starbucks executive vice president, in a statement regarding the Starbucks for Life offer.
The offer starts Dec. 2 and runs until Christmas, The Wall Street Journalreports.
And what would this prize add up to? If you buy one coffee every day from Starbucks, that comes to $22,995.00 over 30 years, according to USA TODAY Network's coffee cost calculator.

Takata Air Bag Recall

Takata Corp. (TYO:7312), the Japanese maker of vehicle safety parts used by auto manufacturers, is only now beginning to realize the immense cost it’s going to pay for selling faulty airbags to at least 10 different automakers dating to at least as far back as 2001. These safety bags can rupture when they’re deployed and spray bits of metal into drivers and front-seat passengers, making worse whatever injuries the components were meant to avert.

NOTE: Scroll down for the full searchable list of cars with Takata-airbag related problems that have been identified up to Aug. 7.
Acura, BMW, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac,Saab, Subaru, Toyota.

Public Questions On The November Ballot

There are two questions on the November 4th ballot.

Question No.1 is a constitutional amendment that would allow courts the latitude to order pretrial detention of a person in a criminal case without a chance to post bail.  It also grants judges the discretion to release suspects without posting bail.

Hadley Pleads Guilty

Steven Hadley, 32, of Port Republic, now faces a five-year suspended sentence under the plea agreement.

He was originally charged with four counts of official misconduct Sept. 24, 2013, the same day he was critically injured when his pickup left the Garden State Parkway and struck a tree.

Today, he pleaded to one count, with the others dismissed. The plea took place before the case went to a grand jury, so Hadley had not been indicted.
He admitted in court that from April to May 2013, the woman -- identified only as J.N. -- was an informant for him, and made drug purchases. During that time, he also had a sexual relationship with her.
"You understand that that constitutes official misconduct?" attorney Joseph Levin asked him.
Hadley, now paralyzed in a wheelchair, replied yes.

Following the fiery crash, Hadley spent seven months in the hospital and his injuries are considered permanent, First Assistant Prosecutor Diane Ruberton said.

Police Car Dashboard Cameras

Dashboard video cameras on police cars are expensive, but worth every cent in the long run, say chiefs in local departments now equipped with the devices.

A law signed by Gov. Chris Christie last month has made the technology mandatory for new patrol vehicles.

The law provides a $25 surcharge on DWI convictions to pay for the $5,000 cameras, but some police worry that the fee won’t be nearly enough to cover their department’s costs of implementing the mandate.

Dems Nominate 2 to County Board of Elections

With just two weeks to go to the election, Atlantic County Democrats are now suddenly scrambling to replace their two members on the four-person Atlantic County Board of Elections.

Democratic Chairman Jim Schroeder said the party would propose Ernest Aponte, 48, of Mullica Township, who has unsuccessfully run for several local offices, to replace Bernice “Sandy” Couch. It would also seek to nominate John W. Mooney, 68, of Galloway and a former county superintendent of elections, to replace Paula Dunn, whom Schroeder said has had health problems.

The board is responsible for counting the ballots after elections, as well as any recounts. State law requires two members apiece from the two parties with the highest vote totals in the most recent election.

State law says vacancies require the county and state chairmen to jointly nominate candidates to the governor, who then names them to the seats. Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie, did not respond to a request for comment.
Couch was first appointed to the board in December 2005. She filed this July to run for Pleasantville’s Board of Education. She said on Monday, “They need somebody who is going to look out for the kids and their education.”

State law bans anyone in elective office from sitting on a board that counts the ballots. It also says that a seat “shall be deemed vacant upon such member becoming a candidate for an office to be voted on at … any general election.”
Couch said board Chairman Roger K. Marshall told her about six weeks ago she would have to resign. Marshall did not respond to a request for comment.

Update

On Tuesday, Atlantic County Freeholder Ernest Coursey criticized the picks. Coursey, who is black, said that Democrats proposed to replace a white woman and a black woman with two white men. Furthermore, Coursey, whose freeholder district includes much of Pleasantville and Atlantic City, said neither candidate hails from the two municipalities, which have the greatest number of Democratic voters.
Schroeder could not be reached Tuesday evening

Questions have been raised about the counting of Northfield's School Board Referendum and other matters.
Lee Moore, a spokesman for the state Attorney General’s office, which provides legal guidance to the board, referred questions to the Department of State, which oversees elections. Department of State spokeswoman Nora Walsh did not respond to questions on Tuesday.

The second Democrat, Bernice “Sandy” Couch, filed to run for the Pleasantville Board of Education in July. State law says the seat immediately becomes vacant when an election board member runs for election, but Couch has said she did not know she had to give up her seat until recently.
She also only told other board members this month.
As a result, she was one of three commissioners who signed off on Northfield’s $7.4 million school board referendum. City voters voted nearly 3-1 for the proposal on Sept. 30.
It is unclear what will happen to the election.

The blood sample tested negative for Ebola, a Carnival spokesperson confirmed. In a statement to passengers titled “7 Things to Know,” the Centers for Disease Control said, “your fellow passenger remains well and has had no symptoms of illness in the 19 days since performing lab test for an Ebola patient as part of their job as a healthcare worker.” By Monday, the hospital worker would no longer have to monitor her health or adhere to any travel restrictions, the CDC said.

N.J. Nursing Unions Demand Help And Answers

Five nursing unions representing more than 25,000 nurses in New Jersey met Friday to demand that the state Department of Health come up with better standards for protective clothing and procedures. They also called on the department to set up an Ebola task force immediately.
Nurses told News 12 that their concerns have grown after a nurse in Texas said that her staff had exposed skin while treating the Ebola patient Thomas Duncan, who later died.

Expert States 21 -Day Quarantine For Ebola Is Dangerously Short

In a paper published Oct. 14 in the journal PLOS Currents: Outbreaks, Drexel University's Dr. Charles N. Haas argues that there's not enough evidence to support the recommended 21-day quarantine period for people suspected of harboring the virus.
"Twenty-one days has been regarded as the appropriate quarantine period for holding individuals potentially exposed to the Ebola virus to reduce the risk of contagion, but there does not appear to be a systemic discussion for the basis of this period," Hass said in a written statement.
Hass argues in the paper that outbreaks of Ebola in Zaire (1976) and Uganda (2000), as well as data from the first nine months of the current outbreak, suggest that there could be up to a 12-percent chance that someone could begin showing symptoms of Ebola after 21 days, according to the statement.
As Haas put it in an email to The Huffington Post, "the risk is certainly not zero of anyone beyond 21 days converting to symptomatic."

Taj Mahal Union Contract Voided By Judge

Judge Kevin Gross in Delaware granted a request by Trump Entertainment Resorts to terminate its contract with Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union. The company and billionaire investor Carl Icahn had said the casino can't survive without shedding costly pension and health care obligations.

The reaction was less cheerful from the union, which lost guarantees on wages, pensions and health care.

"The decision today will certainly enrage the workers who have relied on and fought for their health care for three decades," said Bob McDevitt, president of Local 54. "We intend to continue to fight this both in the courts and in the streets."

Ebola Czar

Republicans are pointing to Democratic operative Ron Klain's background in politics -- rather than public health -- as evidence that he isn’t up to the job as "Ebola czar."
The criticism comes after the White House announced Friday that Klain, a longtime aide to Democratic campaigns and a former chief of staff for Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Al Gore, would oversee the administration’s response to the virus.
“Installing yet another political appointee who has no medical background or infectious disease control experience will do little to reassure Americans who are increasingly losing confidence with the Administration’s Ebola strategy,” said Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Penn.), who convened Thursday’s congressional panel on the administration’s response to the threat posed by the deadly outbreak.

Carnival Magic Ebola Threat

A healthcare worker who had direct contact with deceased Ebola victim, Duncan, took a cruise with her husband on the Carnival Magic. The seven night cruise began on October 12th from Galveston, Texas. The ship called on Roatan, Honduras on Wednesday and Belize City on Thursday. The ship has 4633 people on board.

There are reports she was showing symptoms similar to Ebola and is in quarantine.
John Head, Carnival Senior Cruise Director has denied that the lab supervisor at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital has shown  any symptoms of Ebola but admits she is in isolation on board the ship.

The ship is anchored in the waters off Belize.  The Belize Coast Guard has been deployed to prevent anyone from leaving the ship.
The Belizian Government has refused a US request for assistance in evacuating the passenger through Phillip Goldson International Airport.
The ship has been denied docking privileges at Cozumel and from last twitter reports, it is on its way back to Galveston, Texas.

House Fire On Weymouth Road

 House fire

The residents of a house that was severely damaged by flames Thursday in Mullica Township have been displaced, though neither occupant was present at the time of the fire.

Mullica police said the township's Public Works Supervisor Steve Sperlak called in the fire, at about 3:05 p.m., after checking there was no one inside the residence in the 300 block of Weymouth Road.
Three fire companies arrived at the scene, in the Elwood section of the township, and suppressed the heavy fire in the ranch style home.
Damage to the home, occupied by two residents, is estimated in excess of $100,000, police said.
The fire began in the master bedroom but the cause is still under investigation.
The American Red Cross said they provided food, clothes, shoes, transportation and lodging to the displaced occupants.
