Capt. Scott Newhall's Summer Lesson Plan - Fishing

  Fishing Family
Scott Newhall holds a small flounder his son Alex boated while fishing in the bay behind Brigantine. Scott Newhall, of Absecon, regularly goes out fishing on his boat with his sons Michael, 4, and Alex, 6. His father Les and wife Melissa also enjoy fishing as well. Fishing is a way for Newhall and his boys to bond.

“It’s a bonding experience and a learning experience,” said Newhall, a physical education teacher at Mullica Township School District. “For most kids, fishing is one of the highlights of the summer.”

You could say Scott Newhall has an extended fishing family.

Newhall, of Absecon, breaks out the rod and reel with his two young sons, 4-year-old Michael and 6-year-old Alex. It’s a hobby passed on by his own father, who took Newhall fishing from when he was 5 years old growing up in the Mount Laurel area in Burlington County. He was instantly hooked, no pun intended.
He’s also a part-time charter captain with Time Out Charters, taking anglers — many of them families with young children — to fish in the back bays and ocean for fluke, striped bass and sharks, among others. Kids, in particular, love sharks, even if they’re just dogfish.
He takes moments from these nautical adventures and turns them into learning experiences. Michael and Alex searching for crabs in Brigantine’s Cove beaches is an opportunity for Newhall to teach them biology. Waiting for a catch, waiting for your line to sing, is a lesson in patience.

Fishing, an activity often taught from generation to generation, is more than just a wistful way to spend an afternoon. The Newhalls and other South Jersey fishing families say casting lines is a wholesome way to unite as a family as well as teach lessons you can take off the shore or boat.
