Atlantic County Surrogate Challengers

Republican Egg Harbor Township Committeeman Joe Cafero, 58, is challenging incumbent Atlantic County Surrogate James Curcio for the GOP nomination this year.

Cafero, the regional manager for the state Motor Vehicle Commission, has been on township committee about five years, he said.

He said he came into the MVC with the Gov. Chris Christie administration as a manager, and moved up to regional manager a couple of years later. In his current job he oversees 11 agencies with 300 employees in six counties, he said.

The surrogate is elected every five years and is Judge of the Surrogate's Court. The job mainly involves determining the validity of wills, and appointing administrators of estates and guardians for minors and incapacitated people, according to the county web site.
The 2014 salary for the position was about $91,650.
Cafero is challenging Curcio, who came under fire in 2012 after being arrested on his second drunk driving charge in two years. Some in his party wanted him to resign, but Curcio refused. He has said he stopped drinking after the 2012 arrest, to which he pled guilty.
The nominee will be decided at the Atlantic County Republican Convention March 21.

Former freeholder and Atlantic County Surrogate Jim Carney, who was narrowly defeated by current Republican Surrogate James Curcio in 2010, has announced he will run again for the position.

“I know I did a good job,” the Democrat said Thursday. “My successor thinks he has everything in order. He hasn’t really made improvements to the office.”

He said he was elected the chief of the New Jersey Surrogates group in 2010, and was on the codification committee to update state laws.
Carney is the Director of Asset Acquisition and Liquidations for Surplus Services Co. of Northfield, and a commisioner for the New Jersey Casino Revenue Fund Advisory Commission. He has been involved with numerous community groups and was elected to Egg Harbor Township Committee before becoming a freeholder.
