Even though South Jersey broke a 127-year-old temperature record this
morning, most eyes and snow brushes are paying attention to a snowstorm
that could clip the area later this evening.
Record cold for Monday morning
The temperature at 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16 was 2 degrees at the
Atlantic City International Airport, breaking a 125-year-old record.
The previous mark had been 3 degrees and was set in 1888, when Grover
Cleveland was president, the Cleveland Spiders were planning to begin
play in the National League of Base Ball.
The National Weather Service keeps official South Jersey records at
the Atlantic City International Airport in Egg Harbor Township.
Temperatures in other areas of the state were a few degrees colder than
the official record.
Winter storm warning for South Jersey
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for
all of South Jersey from 6 p.m. this evening through tomorrow afternoon.
The warning calls for areas of snow to begin falling later this
evening, become heavy overnight and diminish around daybreak tomorrow.
The greatest accumulations are expected to fall across the tip of Cape May County, where up to 8 inches of snow is expected.
About 4-6 inches will fall across northern Cape May and southern Atlantic counties, the Weather Service said.
Snowfall amounts will quickly fall off in locations further to the north.
