EGG HARBOR CITY — Philadelphia Avenue is a lifeline for Egg Harbor City, the home of its business district and the connector between its main residential area and Cedar Creek High School.
In the summer, it’s also the
route taken by kids on foot and on bikes, on their way swim at the Egg
Harbor City Lake and Campground.
With a recent pedestrian death on
the road, Mayor Lisa Jiampetti is drawing attention to how small the
shoulder is on a road regularly used by kids. It is less than 1 foot
wide in many places.
She is asking Atlantic County,
which owns the road, also called County Route 563, to consider building a
bike path along the road between downtown and the lake. It would pass
one entrance to Cedar Creek.
“Ideally, we would like to see a
path separated from the roadway constructed on one side or both sides of
Philadelphia Avenue to provide a safe corridor for pedestrian and
bicycle traffic,” Jiampetti said in a recent letter to the Board of
Chosen Freeholders. “Or, as an alternative, the widening of Philadelphia
Avenue to provide a bike lane
County spokeswoman Linda Gilmore
said the county has received the letter and is looking at the issue but
doesn’t have an answer yet.
Erick “Buster” Clements, 43, was
struck and killed at 3:50 p.m. Jan. 15 at Philadelphia Avenue and
Esslair Street in Egg Harbor City, police said. He was walking
northbound on the road’s small shoulder, even though there is a section
of sidewalk in that area, and was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by
Jeanne Weinberger, 63, of Mullica Township, police said.
