Community Center Dedication In Honor Of Spiros Malaspina

The basketball team of the Greek Orthodox Youth Association of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Egg Harbor Township kicked off its season recently sporting a new feature to its uniforms.
This year the team honors the memory of a much-admired and longtime member of the church - Dr. Spiros A. Malaspina, who died Sept. 1 after a seven-year battle with multiple sclerosis.
Team members, which include Dr. Malaspina's son, Alexander Spiros Malaspina, have added specially embroidered patches to the jerseys of their uniforms. The patches not only honor Dr. Malaspina but are also intended to create awareness for the disease. The patches have his initials over an orange ribbon, which is the symbol for multiple sclerosis awareness.
In added recognition of this dedication, all community members attending the games will also be encouraged to wear orange, according to church leaders.

The team is dedicating its season to the memory of Dr. Malaspina, who was a committed member of Holy Trinity, said Eugenia Kramvis, who heads the church's Outreach Ministry.
As a parish council president who served for more than seven years, Dr. Malaspina was a leader in the building of the Holy Trinity Community Center on church grounds at Mill Road and Ridge Avenue. He was also devoted to quality education and was the former president of the Mullica Township School District.
The Holy Trinity Community Center opened in April 2007 and is home to the Trinity Learning Center Pre-School and Kindergarten, where Dr. Malaspina served on the board of directors. The center is host to Gamblers Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Boy and Girl Scout of America meetings and overnight camps for disabled children (WAVE Camp).
The center also is a polling station for elections and provides greatly needed space for the many ministries and programs of the parish, according to the church.
Dr. Malaspina represented the Holy Trinity parish at the 300th Anniversary of Egg Harbor Township in 2010, which was held in the center's gymnasium.
Because he had such a profoundly positive impact on the community, Holy Trinity plans to name the center in his honor as the Spiros Alexander Malaspina Community Center, church officials said. The date for the dedication ceremony will be determined later.
