The bicycle route went from
Atlantic City, up the Atlantic City Expressway to two long loops through
Hammonton and Mullica Township. And the race was held on the same day
as Hammonton's annual Red, White and Blueberry Festival
.
.
The
combination may have drawn bigger crowds to Hammonton to attend the
festival and see the cyclists, but it also closed so many roads that
many motorists were trapped in what seemed like never-ending traffic
jams.

Keep triathlon cyclists off Route 30 next time
On
Sunday, I was stuck in traffic for two and a half hours coming back
from Philadelphia going to Absecon through Egg Harbor City and
Hammonton. Why in the world was the Challenge Atlantic City Triathlon
race permitted to cut traffic on Route 30 in Mullica Township and
Hammonton?
It's
not like it was one pack of riders, and then the roads were open. There
were single riders stretched out for miles. Traffic was backed up on
Route 30 in Mullica and then again for miles in Hammonton so cyclists
could cross the White Horse Pike.
If
it had not been for an alert police officer finally moving traffic
cones allowing traffic to cross Route 206 at Route 30 instead of
dead-ending on a side road east of Route 206, we would have spent
another hour in traffic. I cannot imagine the frustration of someone who
was heading to a function or Atlantic City International Airport. If
the triathlon is held again, please close down one lane of the Atlantic
City Expressway for as far as the cyclists need to go.
