Amatol - Mullica's Ghost Town

Amatol existed for a matter of months nearly a century ago.  Operations began in July, 1918 as a patchwork of munitions factories and residential streets.  The isolated community swelled with workers who inhabited a new downtown with amenities as a cafeteria, dance hall and movie theater.  World War I ended on November 11, 1918 and the 6,000 acre facility was soon shuttered.  The vegetation- shrouded ruins still beguile residents of the Pinelands outpost.

This story of our community is trying to be preserved by life long resident Louise Mazetis and the homeless Mullica Township Historical Society unofficially led by Township Committeeman Anthony Gabris.  The Society is close to signing a lease on the historic two-room Hilda Frame School in the Nesco Section.

Soon a museum will be home to all the historic artifacts and articles from Mullica's past.

Read the article for some very interesting history of our Township.

Our grandchildren(maybe children at this rate) will be reading "...the Mullica section of Hammonton was once a Township with its own police force,a small town hall,a dump,a school and four volunteer fire departments...."
