Mormon Church

What a disgrace that the Mormon Church spent $20 Million dollars fighting against the civil rights afforded gay Americans under the Constitution of the United States. What a disgrace that the Mormon Church will forever more be linked to fighting against the civil rights of fellow Americans. History will look very harshly against this institution in the years ahead as gay Americans fight for and win those basic civil liberties and rights that us straight Americans take for granted. Shame on California for putting fellow Americans civil rights to a ballot question. I get sick just thinking of all of the worthy causes that $20 Million dollars could have been used for. Lets look forward to this presidency and see if Obama will take the bold step to fully recognize gay rights by passing landmark legislation for our entire country. For if a fellow liberal state like California cant be trusted, the entire Union cannot be trusted, nor should it. Obama needs to address this basic civil rights issue from a national perspective. This issue is not religious at all, its about fundamental civil rights.

I strongly believe in the separation of Church and State. While I respect everyone's choice of their own faith, I don't feel that any church should try to force their views on a very diverse population. This was one of the reasons the first groups of people came and started communities here.

If this church wants to get involved in this manner, I feel that every bit of it's property should be taxed by the government. This "Church" has no business imposing it's views on civil matters. We are all supposed to be equal and when you start limiting one group of people, it will only be a matter of time before other groups are attacked. All "Churches" that participate in political matters should have their exempt status removed.

Shame on California is right, I never expected California to vote this down. The Mormon church "used" religion as a reason, which again is one of the reasons that a lot of Christian religious leaders should take a long, hard look at themselves and tenets they teach as fact. They preyed upon the religious and used the dogmatic teachings of most Christian faiths which basically requires followers to ignore their own social experiences, as well as judicial systems, social systems etc. Basically, their faith in Jesus Christ will absolve them from all sin, no matter what the sin is and no matter how much they contradict themselves.

Our civil rights are supposed to protect us from discrimination based on gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, etc. This also includes free political speech.

The Mormon Church, as any other church, should stay out of government affairs. They should dictate their tenets of faith to their own congregations. 25 million dollars would have fed and sheltered alot of homeless people or could have given scholarships to deserving students. I could think of many ways to spread that money around and it wouldn't be to try and stop equality for all.
