Hearing Set For Sarraf

MULLICA TOWNSHIP _ The veteran police officer who may lose his job and significant pension benefits because of medical conditions that prevent him from working overnight will get an administrative hearing soon, according to township officials.
Paul “P.J.” Sarraf was suspended with pay by Chief John Thompson Sept. 17, "with the intent to dismiss," said his wife Barbara Saraff. She and about two dozen supporters of her husband attended a township committee meeting wearing #teampj tee shirts.
But elected officials said they cannot comment on personnel matters, other than to say the township has hired an administrative hearing officer who will be fair to all.

A hearing was set for Oct. 12, but both sides said the date may change because of conflicts with participants' schedules.
Saraff has been a police officer here for about 19 years, said his wife, and does not qualify for medical disability. His doctors tell him he can do all aspects of the job from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Barbara Saraff said.
He has been diagnosed with sleep apnea and other conditions, she said.
Her husband has been advised by his Police Benevolent Association attorney not to comment publicly, she said.
Thompson had told him his need to work day shifts cannot be accommodated, Barbara Sarraf said in June. At that time her husband's supporters packed another committee meeting, demanding the township accommodate him.

Sarraf will file an American Disabilities Act claim, Barbara Sarraf said.
Sarraf had recently been working day shift until his suspension, she said.
Barbara Sarraf said her husband trained to be a police officer in Florida and was taught how to capture and handle alligators.
Just a day after his suspension, she said, an alligator was spotted and videoed in the township on Hamburg Avenue. It was a situation he could have helped with, she said.

Many speakers at the June meeting said they felt the problem was personal animosity between Thompson, who did not attend either meeting, and Sarraf.
Both men live and work in the township.
Barbara Sarraf said her husband will only get back what he paid into the pension system if he loses his job before 20 years on the job. If he works for 20 years, he can collect 50 percent of his pension payments upon retirement, but no health benefits. Only if he works for 25 years can he collect his full retirement and get medical benefits, she said.

Community response is reminiscent of that in support of tenured Mullica Township Elementary School kindergarten teacher Kelly Mascio in 2013 and 2014, when the Board of Education moved to take away her tenure and fire her after two 5-year-olds said they had engaged in sexual play in her classroom bathroom.
Mascio got a great deal of support from other teachers and from members of the community. She also lives in the township.
In June of 2014, state Arbitrator Daniel F. Brent ruled Mascio should not lose her job or tenure and was entitled to almost all of her back pay lost to unpaid suspension.
The township has 13 uniformed officers, according to its website, including seven patrol officers, a corporal, a sergeant, a captain, a matron, a detective and the chief. Support staff include a secretary and a technical coordinator. However, there has been at least one officer resignation since the data was posted.

If Officer Sarraf can catch alligators and has training, why doesn’t help with it since he’s so involved with the community. You don’t need a badge to help. He wants support from the community, yet his wife throws in the face of same community, “since he was put on paid leave day before alligator sighting, can’t help”. Decency only okay if getting paid for it? If Officer Sarraf was told not to comment, why is his wife commenting?

This site is extremely biased. My comment left yesterday regarding Officer Sarraf was in no way disrespectful, obscene or foul.it brought up questions, but I guess we’ll never know what the true opinions of Mullicans are as long as this site continues to block comments they don’t agree with. Why bother?

It is simply amazing that not one person will comment on this subject.

Come to the next public meeting to support this officer.

A Galloway Township Police lost his house to a fire this week and the WHOLE community especially his fellow officers came to the families aid. Where is the community and the MTPD rank and file on this situation?

Sorry 2:19 pm. I was extremely busy yesterday and didn't check the comment section. I'm assuming the 8:10 comment is yours and it is posted now.

More probably it's the 11:36 am one

Alligator hunting training is not a required skill to be a Mullica Police Officer but the ability to work all different shifts is required. Presently, Sleep Apnea is not considered to be a medical disability. If Officer Sarraf is allowed to work permanent day shifts, members of the MTPD rank & file will be forced to work nights on a rapid schedule. Is this fair to the rest of the men? Can the Mullica tax payers afford to hire a new officer to take Sarraf's place in shift rotation? Can the police union even defend a non-disability request? This is a sad situation.

Just for the record “Anonymous” since we don’t wanna give names here.. LOL.. Mine is Robin by the way!! Her statement of him being trained in Florida as a police officer and catching alligators was part of his training was simply a statement!! But furthermore, he has PLENTY of support from this community! Guess you haven’t attended a council meeting lately!! And also, Mrs. Sarraf will comment and stand up for what is right as she is allowed.. I suppose if it was your spouse who was being treated this way, you wouldn’t stand up and fight? Would you just lie down and take it? Let me also tell you this... If all you got out of the THIRD article written about Officer Sarraf was about an alligator, then I believe you have your priorities mixed up! May you NEVER be on the receiving end of what this officer and his family had had to endure.. You would never be able to handle it.. Hell, you aren’t even brave enough to give your name!!

Yeah, you really need to come to the next meeting!! I mean since you have so much to say!!

All of you have no clue how much this man is being railroaded or anything about his comdition.. It is not just sleep apnea.. Maybe do more than just read a paper.. Maybe actually attend a meeting.. Be informed.. Ask questions.. Be there when questions are asked.. Be there to hear that our public safety director can’t even answer how many working polive officers we have at a town council meeting.. Ever wonder how many LEO’s have left under the supervision under our current chief? Bet you would be really suprised! Please don’t assume you know facts, when assuming!! Your comments really show that you have no clue how much the taxpayers have already spent on this.. And no clue what kind of treatment this officer has received!!!

And in response to tge person who says that Sleep Apnea is not a disability.. Let me clarify for you.. It actually falls under the 1990 act which DOES in fact make it a disability, but furthermore, if our township was fully staffed (which btw, never is) this wouldn’t even be an issue!!

If Sleep Apnea is a disability and you say he has other conditions, it seems that the officer is making his own case that he is not physically capable of handling the extreme mental alertness and physical strength required to be a police officer. Many lives of citizens and his fellow officers depend on his quick actions and decision making. I feel extremely bad for his family and but I feel that people who do know all the facts in this case must make decisions that are best for the public welfare.

Just have one question for the Chief, do you snore?

Anonymous said...

Nobody cares if the Chief snores, except maybe his wife.

Please do your research on work shift disorder as well AFTER you actually attend a public council meeting!! He is not unfit to work during day hours.. And if you knew of his condition or anything of whats truly happening... You would know that the publics welfare is just fine when he can be accomodated to work day shift hours just as every one of the drs. have advised!!! And for months the accomodation has been made, but now the town can pay for an officer to sit at home (while were short staffed)! I think I’d be a little concerned with that don’t ya think? Or why there’s such a high turnover rate within the police department? Maybe you should refer to the meeting minutes found on the townships website if you wanna stay anonymous and not brave a council meeting.. To be honest,?if I was as so uninformed as you seem to be, I’d surely have my behind at a meeting to see what’s going on in this town! And my guess from your statements and opinions is that you have yet to ever attend one regarding Officer Sarraf.. But that’s ok.. It all comes out in the wash! Goodness always superceeds evil!

Someone who has put 19 years into a job should be able to bid for what shift they want to work !! With that much time in he should be working days with weekends off

Anonymous said...

Amen!!! Even if it wasn’t with weekends off, he def should be accomodated. And based on everything that has been exposed, it clearly is nothing more than a Anti-Sarraf campaign... But, it does all come out in the wash, and there are going to be some really interesting things that are gonna have to be answered by our township.. #TeamPJ is not quitting or giving up on this one. Thank you for speaking out!!

Is it written in the police contract or the Twp codes that a person can bid on hours after working a certain number of years? Are people confusing facts with feelings? What's been exposed? I couldn't find any facts about this case in the minutes. The Committee couldn't even comment. You state that this is an "Anti-Sarraf" campaign but you stated previously that the Twp. accommodated Sarraf for months. The Twp. also has to worry about setting a precedence with Sarraf. What happens if 3 of the younger men gain 60 lbs and develop sleep apnea? Will they be allowed to work steady days? Will they be able to sue the Twp. if they are denied because this health condition was previously approved for day shift. There are a lot of legal issues involved and I don't see how they can be resolved by character references or "feelings".
