NJ Recreational Marijuana Vote Cancelled

TRENTON — Bills to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in New Jersey were pulled from consideration at the last minute on Monday, as the full Senate and Assembly were due to vote on a long list of legislation.
Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo, D-Atlantic, said no cannabis bills will be voted on Monday.

Mazzeo and State Senator Chris Brown, R-Atlantic, had said Sunday that the fate of the bills was still uncertain, as there didn't seem to be enough votes to get them passed in their current form.

Advocates have stressed the need to legalize a widely used substance and stop penalizing people for buying, using and selling it. But opponents have said the high cost of cannabis under the bill, which would be taxed at $42 per ounce plus municipal taxes, would not eliminate the black market, and medical groups warned it would create another public health problem.
