A multistate outbreak of E. coli that has sickened 35 people, including seven in New Jersey and nine in Pennsylvania, has been traced back to chopped romaine lettuce from Arizona, federal officials say.
The
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with help from state
health officials, is investigating a string of E. coli cases that have
appeared in people from 11 states.
Because
no particular brand of lettuce has been identified in the cases as of
Friday, CDC officials say people who have store-bought chopped romaine
lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped
romaine lettuce, “should not eat it and should throw it away, even if
some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick.”
