Niceler’s a very rare case in the world of criminal study, said Nathan Link, assistant professor of criminal justice at Rutgers University.

“He certainly doesn’t represent your typical burglar,” he said, explaining most burglars are opportunists who strike close to home where they feel comfortable and generally “age out” of committing crime well before they hit their 50s.

“He was just really smart in his crimes,” Link said. “He planned them out to the extent that an overwhelming number of criminals don’t.”
