Come next month, Project Prom will make its return to serve South Jersey teens.
Project
Prom, in its third year, provides dresses and accessories at no cost to
students with a high school student ID, mainly in Atlantic, Cape May
and Cumberland counties.
Organizers
say they will have more than 1,000 new and used prom dresses, along
with accessories, to give away in March, said Project Prom organizer
Rene Kane.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” Kane said.
The
giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24; 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25; and from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 26,
on the second floor of Kensington Furniture in Northfield, 200 Tilton
Road.
The effort is organized
to help families in need with the expenses that come with prom,
including the dress, getting hair and makeup done, as well as jewelry
and accessories.
Kane, a real-estate agent in Margate,
said the program had been going on in the area years ago and she was
inspired to bring it back after seeing a post on social media from
someone in need looking for a prom dress for their daughter.
Kane teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City to launch the event and it now has about 100 volunteers.
“I thought, ‘We really need to have this again,’” she said.
The
group is still looking for donated new or gently worn prom dresses and
accessories, particularly plus sizes, from residents, stores or
businesses, organizers said.
Donations can be dropped off at Kensington Furniture. For information, see projectpromAC.com or facebook.com/ProjectPromAC.
