Last-minute negotiations crumbled as Senate Democrats blocked a four-week stopgap extension in a late-night vote, causing the fourth government shutdown in a quarter century. Behind the scenes, however, leading Republicans and Democrats were already moving toward a next step, trying to work out a compromise to avert a lengthy shutdown.
Since the shutdown began at the start of a weekend, many of the immediate effects will be muted for most Americans. But any damage could build quickly if the closure is prolonged. And it comes with no shortage of embarrassment for the president and political risk for both parties, as they wager that voters will punish the other at the ballot box in November.
Social Security and most other safety net programs are unaffected by the lapse in federal spending authority. Critical government functions will continue, with uniformed service members, health inspectors and law enforcement officers set to work without pay. But if no deal is brokered before Monday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed.

This was the last straw for me. I am totally disgusted with the democratic party that shut down the government over a short term spending bill. There was NOTHING in this bill that they disagreed with. They refused to vote for poor children's health care! The democrats are constantly fighting for illegal immigrants while slapping the face of extremely hard working citizens and our military. I'm done. This despicable move was done out of hatred for Trump who is having record breaking successes in many areas.
A year ago, I felt sorry for the DACA people. No more. No amnesty,No benefits,No nothing for people who broke our laws and became criminals by stepping over our border illegally. They have the nerve of protesting in OUR streets and at OUR federal buildings for their DEMANDS. What other country would allow this?
Past administrations gave them benefits & free education & health care while citizens struggled with these issues for their own families.
Democrats want their votes! There are mountains of proof that illegals have been voting in our elections. National Federal Voter ID Cards are a necessity NOW!
It's coming out that the 800,000+ DACA "children" are really around 3.6 million. Only 2.7% ever bothered to apply for citizenship. There are about 11.5 Registered illegals. Imagine how many are not registered. Granting citizenship to these people will give the democrats an overwhelming voting base. That's what they're fighting for.
Extend the work permits for the DACA Kids. Let them stay as long as they don't commit any crimes and let them get in line behind existing applicants to apply for citizenship on their own.
No more free benefits,or college grants for them. All their families should get legal permits to be here or face deportation.
Deport all felons and gang members. It's totally insane to protect these people.
I agree completely fraud proof voter ID cards should be issued to all citizens. Any illegal caught voting should be deported immediately.
