Off-Roaders Given Limits In The Pinelands

The Pinelands Commission, the independent state agency which oversees policy in the Pinelands National Preserve, recently passed a resolution designed to limit the havoc wreaked by drivers intent on exploring the far reaches of the park from behind the wheel.
The move by the 15-member commission designates specific sand roads as available to motorized vehicles, allowing Park Police to issues citations to anyone who gives in to the urge to circumvent the regulations.
"The Commission's resolution means there is finally a map of Wharton State Forest that shows a responsible way to explore its 122,800 acres of open space," Carlton Montgomery, executive director of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance, writes in the alliance's latest newsletter.
