Venizya Sanchez Gets 100th Hit

Cedar Creek High School softball player Venizya Sanchez knew she was close to reaching 100 hits for her career going into Thursday’s 4-3 win over Mainland Regional.
But she didn’t know she was knocking on the door — not even when coach Shawn Cohen approached her with the ball and a big grin on his face after she slapped a single through the middle in the seventh inning.
“At first I was confused,” said Sanchez, a junior from Mullica Township. “I was, like, did I step out of the box? Because it was a changeup, and I was (slap-hitting). I thought I was out.”

No, far from it. Her second hit of the game was the 100th of her career, sparking a celebration that included her Pirates teammates, parents Maria Torres and Pablo Sanchez, flowers, balloons and a little chihuahua named “Vicious.”
