MAYS LANDING — A lot of high school swimmers earned medals for the first time Saturday at the George L. Hess Educational Center.
The
second annual Cape-Atlantic League Novice Championships was held for
boys and girls in their first year of competitive swimming at the Hess
School’s Margaret A. Stringer Aquatic Center.
Timed
final heats were held in boys and girls swimming in high school’s
standard 11 races. Swimmers were there from Cedar Creek, Oakcrest,
Middle Township, Ocean City, Cape May Tech, Holy Spirit and Lower Cape
May Regional. There was no team scoring.
“We had about 20 more swimmers today than we had last year,” said meet director Steve Ferguson, the coach of Cedar Creek’s teams. “We had all the events, even harder ones, like the 200 (individual medley) and the 100 butterfly. There were a couple races where boys and girls swam together, but then they were scored separately. After last year’s meet, we had a higher return of (second-year) swimmers than we had in previous years.”
Cedar Creek freshman Nathan Goodrich won the boys 200 IM in a meet mark of 3:04.53.

“I mostly like the breaststroke other
than freestyle,” said Goodrich, a 14-year-old Mullica Township resident.
“This makes me want to push more and get better. I feel like I did
really well.”
Entry fees and donations at the event raised money for the Special Olympics of New Jersey.
