NJ Right To Die Bill

A bill would allow a terminally ill person to end their own life passed committee and will now head to the New Jersey Assembly for a vote.
The New Jersey Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act would require patients suffering from a terminal disease to first verbal request a prescription from their doctor, followed by a second verbal request at least 15 days later and one request in writing signed by two witnesses who are related to the person.

In addition, the doctor would have to offer the patient a chance to rescind their request. A consulting doctor would then have to agree with the original diagnosis and reaffirm the patient is capable of making a decision.
A patient must have a prognosis of six months or less to live to request and be prescribed medication under the bill. They also must be an adult resident of New Jersey and has voluntarily said they want to die.

The bill defines a terminal disease as an incurable disease that will result in the person’s death within six months.
“This discussion is about revisiting a statute last looked at in 1978 that never took into account an individual’s right to control their body and their circumstances,” Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) said in a statement. “Like society, medicine, palliative care and hospice services have changed dramatically since then. While there are many choices available right now that may be right for certain people, there is one more choice, not currently available, that deserves an honest discussion.”
