Most Atlantic County offices will be closed Friday because of a scheduled furlough day.
A
furlough day is a mandatory, nonpaid day off for most county employees.
The county executive said the five scheduled furlough days before the
end of the year became necessary to stabilize the county tax rate and
avoid layoffs once the county was notified it would have to come up with
an extra $3.4 million for Atlantic City tax appeals on top of the $7.3
million that had already been budgeted.
The three remaining furlough days are Oct. 17, Nov. 25 and Dec. 23. County officials have previously said they try to schedule furloughs on a Monday or Friday and around a holiday to give employees a longer weekend.

The
Superior Court of New Jersey will remain open as well as the jail, the
Meadowview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the animal shelter, county
senior centers and transportation, according to a statement from the
county.
