The Atlantic County Republican Committee has selected Hamilton Township Deputy Mayor Amy Gatto as Atlantic County’s next freeholder-at-large.
Gatto,
34, of Mays Landing, will finish out the term of incumbent Freeholder
Will Pauls resigned from the board last month as a result of his move to
Cape May County.
The decision was made during a special meeting Thursday at the Mays Landing Country Club in Mays Landing.
Gatto was first elected to the Hamilton
Township Committee in 2007 at age 25. At 29, she became the youngest and
only the third woman to hold the office of mayor in the township’s
history. She joins Freeholder Maureen Kern as the only other women on
the board.
With Gatto’s nine
years of experience on the township committee, her areas of interest
include opposing the expansions of casinos outside of Atlantic City,
protecting the taxpayer’s wallets, advancing initiatives that diversify
the local economy and attracting capital investment.
“Despite
the tough times facing our region, in Hamilton Township, we were able
to eliminate our structural deficit by encouraging economic development
and making government more efficient as well as pay down millions in
municipal debt without raising taxes three of the last four years,”
Gatto said.
Gatto said she was
grateful for Pauls’ service to the community. In 2015, he ran against
incumbent Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, D-Atlantic, and lost by about 1,500
votes. He said previously he would not seek re-election when his term
expired in November.
“Whether as a building trades leader or as our freeholder, Will Pauls always put his heart and soul into fighting for the residents of Atlantic County,” said Gatto in a written statement.
Gatto will be sworn in to the Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept 13 at the Mullica Township Municipal Building, 4528 White Horse Pike, Elwood.
