The Drexel University men’s crew team was one of the best in the eastern United States this spring. The Dragons will try to improve on that against an international field starting Wednesday at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.
The Drexel varsity eight, with
former area high school rowers Dan Palombo (St. Augustine Prep), Dan
Dollin (Holy Spirit) and Nick Capaldi (Oakcrest), meets University
College, of Dublin, Ireland at 10:40 a.m. EST Wednesday in a first-round
match race in the Temple Challenge Cup division. All three are seniors,
and Henley will be their final competition for Drexel.
“The course is up-river instead of down-river, so the current is against you, and that makes it a little tougher,” said Capaldi, a 22-year-old resident of Mullica Township. “We’re used to doing Cup races, with five or six in the race, not just two. It’s a tight race, and you’re right on top of the crew next to you. It’s very exciting.”
