23 Cent Per Gal. Gas Tax Could Start Friday

In the middle of the night, while most of us were sleeping, the Governor and the Assembly concocted a plan to raise your taxes.  Oh, they'll tell you it's fair, trading a 1 percent reduction in the sales tax to balance a 23 cent per gallon hike in the gas tax.
They only way to stop it is to persuade State Sen. President Steve Sweeney not to post the Bill.

Observers said the bill came as a bit of a surprise since there were no experts who testified, and no committee held a hearing on the plan. A bill wasn't even ready until shortly before it was voted on at 12:30 a.m.

He(Christie) said the sales tax cut from 7 percent to 6 percent and phased in over 2017 and 2018 will cost about $1.3 billion, while the gas tax hike is estimated to bring in roughly the same amount, thus resulting in a net-neutral tax on residents. Legislative estimates, however, suggest the state could lose up to nearly $2 billion a year.
The state Senate is expected take up the issue Thursday. But Democratic state Senate President Steve Sweeney said he was in the dark about it and other senators are speaking out against the plan.

UPDATE: Senate Democrats said a vote on the 23-cent gas tax hike plan, which includes a 1 percent cut in the sales tax, will not happen Thursday.
It's not clear when, or if the Democrat-controlled Senate will take up the controversial plan, but they did say that talks are continuing.

Gas taxes going up $.21 gallon Friday? You should call senator Whelan at 609-383-1388 and tell him to vote NO on the gas tax bill. Also call state Senate president steve Sweeny at 609-847-3700 and tell him the same. He has the power to hold it from going out to vote. I've called both today.

You're kidding, right? Whelan was pushing this gas tax plan 2 years ago. The Democrats are pushing it. Your best bet is to call all the Repub Senators to vote NO. Better yet would be if Sweeney doesn't even put it on the floor for a vote. He wants to run for Governor and this isn't going to make him very popular
