On May 2, 2016 at approximately 10:17 am, members of the Township of Hamilton Police Department and the Egg Harbor City Police Department responded to the Ocean City Home Bank in Egg Harbor City for a bank robbery that had just occurred.
After speaking with bank employees, and viewing the surveillance video, it was determined that the suspect produced a note to a teller at the bank demanding money, then fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. Still shot photographs of the suspect were obtained from the bank’s surveillance video and distributed to the public through media and social media outlets.
After receiving countless tips from the public, the suspect was identified as Joseph Whilden Jr., 47/M, of Millville. As a result of a cooperative investigation between the Township of Hamilton Police Department, Egg Harbor City Police Department, New Jersey State Police, FBI, NJ State Parole, United States Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Millville Police Department, Whilden was arrested yesterday morning in a garage in Millville, without incident. Whilden was charged with robbery and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $200,000.00 bail set by JMC Frick.
Whilden was also charged by the New Jersey State Police with an additional bank robbery that occurred on Wednesday, March 5, 2016, in Buena Vista Township. Bail for those charges were set at an additional $100,000.00.
