Well, that first big striped bass we have all been waiting for arrived to start April.
Tim Showell, of
Sweetwater, caught it Friday morning in the Mullica River, and it
weighed 33 pounds, 9 ounces at Captain Howard’s Bait and Tackle in Egg
Harbor City.
Showell, 55, is retired after 30
years with the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department. Accompanied by his
springer, Bella, Showell was trolling a plug while rowing his sneakbox
well up the river.
He was being as “environmentally
friendly” as possible by rowing, he said. The bass was 43 inches long,
the biggest bass he ever caught. It goes on top of Captain Howard’s leader board for a $500 prize in a shop contest that goes to the end of May.
Tim first registered that bass at Absecon Bay Sportsman Center for his brother, Dave Showell,
who took photos and put them online. The theory is that in this age of
social media, there is nothing better than some photos and text to
spread the news of a nice catch and get fishers motivated.
Dave also wondered how his younger brother gets to retire and go fishing when he, Dave, is working in the tackle shop.
