A plan to pave the way for North
Jersey casinos and strip Atlantic City of an intrastate casino monopoly
it has enjoyed for nearly four decades was introduced late Tuesday in
the Legislature by state Democrats.
The proposal calls for an
amendment to the state constitution to allow as many as two casinos in
separate counties outside Atlantic City.
Jersey City, in Hudson County,
and the Meadowlands Racetrack, in Bergen County, both have been promoted
heavily as potential casino sites.
The proposed amendment introduced
Tuesday, sponsored by Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Salem,
Gloucester, Cumberland, and Sen. Paul Sarlo D-Bergen, Passaic, is the
culmination of weeks of political infighting between state Democratic
lawmakers over the terms of the proposal.
Three-fifths of the Legislature must approve the plan by August in order for the proposal to be put to a statewide referendum in November.
