It finally happened. Bestiality is dead in New Jersey.
Gov. Chris Christie signed into
law Monday legislation that now criminalizes bestiality in the state. It
officially closes a state loophole and outlaws the act.
The bill, which passed state
Assembly and Senate without opposition in May, criminalizes any kind of
sexual contact with an animal.
The loophole comes from a state
law that forbids animal cruelty. However, it did not explicitly deny
human sexual activity with beasts.
In 2012, a state cop in Moorestown, NJ, was accused of allegedly molesting cows. He was later cleared because of the discrepancy between animal cruelty laws and his actual action.
The crime is now punishable by up
to 18 months of imprisonment and a fine of up to $10,000. Harsher
penalties are probably if the animal dies as a result of the abuse.
