Mullica Fire Destroys Darmstadt Ave Garage

 By MICHELLE POST, Staff Writer
MULLICA TOWNSHIP — A fire at a three-car garage destroyed a halfway-restored 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monday, but owners of a hay farm there are glad firefighters prevented flames from spreading to a nearby barn.

No one was injured after a fire broke out at 701 Darmstadt Ave. between the White Horse Pike and Duerer Street.
A cat inside the garage safely escaped through a cat door, said Cathy Werner, who owns the home with husband Jim. Goats and chickens at the property were also safe.
Werner was home at the time and noticed something was wrong when lights flickered inside the home and she saw smoke.
Werner said they were lucky the fire did not reach a nearby barn where hay is stored.
Firefighters from five different companies responded, and the fire was under control in about an hour, officials said.
Firefighters stayed through 11 a.m. to put out hotspots, said Louis Critelli, assistant chief of Elwood Volunteer Fire Company.
The heat from the fire melted a nearby greenhouse.

Firefighters douse potential hot spots at a Mullica Township hay farm fire that destroyed a three-car garage and a classic 1963 Corvair stored inside it. But firefighters kept the fire from spreading to a nearby barn holding hay, and to another garage with other antique cars and tractors inside.
