President Barack Obama has granted a request to declare four South Jersey counties disaster areas after the June 23 thunderstorms.
Parts of Atlantic, Burlington,
Camden and Gloucester counties were damaged by storms and straight-line
winds as 330,100 electricity customers lost power.
The storm damaged buildings,
roads and infrastructure, and left a trail of debris. The declaration
authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to initiate its
Public Assistance grant program to aid the affected areas.
The grants to local and state
governments, as well as certain nonprofits, reimburse emergency work
expenses and the repair of some public facilities.
On July 13, Gov. Chris Christie
formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration under the federal
Stafford Act for the four southern New Jersey counties that sustained
more than $15 million in damage.
