Tomato Plant Sale

GALLOWAY FRIENDS TO HOLD THIRD ANNUAL JERSEY TOMATO PLANT SALE

The Atlantic City Area Religious Society of Friends in Galloway Township will hold their annual tomato plant sale on Mother’s Day Weekend, Saturday, May 9th, between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, at their meetinghouse on 437-A South Pitney Road.

The plants are all locally grown by a commercial grower in Nesco, Mullica Township, without pesticides.

For sale will be sought-after, yet often hard-to-find heirloom and hybrid varieties, such as Ramapo, Rutgers, Moreton, Boxcar Willie, Mule Team, Jersey Devil, Jersey Giant and others, which were once the farming industry standards that helped to make Jersey tomatoes known for their superior taste.

Also for sale will be Italian Basil plants to complement the tomatoes.

Tomato plants will be sold in large 4-1/2” individual pots to give home owners a head start in their gardens.  Mother’s Day week is the traditional time for planting tomatoes in South Jersey to avoid possible frost damage, when spring nights normally no longer fall below 50 degrees, the group said.

Price per tomato plant is $2.50 per pot, $10 for five, mix or match.

Their last annual sale quickly sold out, and despite more plants being added to this year’s sale, the Galloway Friends said they anticipate the same results this year.

All proceeds will be used to continue with the restoration of their historic 1828 Quaker meetinghouse.
