EHC Tee- Ball Field Dedicated To Gavin Pabst

EGG HARBOR CITY— It was a bit high, but the first pitch on the new Gavin Pabst Memorial Tee-Ball Field was still met with cheers from the crowd.

But to John Pabst, who threw it out the first baseball of the Egg Harbor City Crusader’s tee-ball season, it was a tough moment.
“If it wasn’t for what happened, he would be out there today playing,” he said.
Pabst, of Barnegat Township, is the father of Gavin, who was stabbed to death in November along with his mother, Michelle Heist Pabst, in their Washington Avenue home. But before his death, Gavin was a tee-ball player with the Crusaders, and Michelle was a coach. On Saturday, Egg Harbor City honored their lives with the opening of the Crusader’s season.

The Crusaders also retired Gavin’s number, 7, and gave a jersey to his father. There were some tears on the field, and John Pabst said that he hopes to make Gavin’s Day, and the fundraiser, an annual event. He is starting a nonprofit, called Hearts and Harley’s, and hosting a motorcycle poker run this summer in Gavin’s honor. The funds from that, as well as those raised Lakewood Blue Claws Game in June, will not only go towards the scholarship, but fund a donation to a women’s shelter as well.
