Only two Republicans broke party ranks Thursday when the Assembly voted to condemn the Gov. Chris Christie administration’s controversial settlement of an environmental damages lawsuit against ExxonMobil.
Both were from South Jersey.
Assemblymen Chris Brown and Sam
Fiocchi sided with Democrats in urging a Superior Court judge to reject
the $225 million agreement. The nonbinding resolution passed by a vote
of 45-16, mostly along party lines.
Brown and Fiocchi are both up for re-election this November in two of the most competitive legislative districts in the state.
Brown, R-Atlantic, said in a statement Friday that the settlement “doesn’t add up.”
“After demanding billions of
dollars in damages and 24 years of legal wrangling, it appears this
settlement falls short of adequately making up for the harms and losses
to the thousands of hard working middle class families and our children
and grandchildren affected by corporate disregard for the environment,”
Brown said.
The settlement has been criticized for accepting only a small fraction of the $8.9 billion in damages sought by New Jersey for natural resource damage to more than 1,500 acres and wetlands near refinery sites in Bayonne and Linden.

It would be a much better country and State if all politicians voted for the public's benefit and not along party lines, lobbyists desires, or campaign donors requests. When will people wake up and vote for people who represent their views and not just push the screen for an unknown name just because it's in the party line?
