And the prolonged period of bitter cold temperatures and icy roads are the primary concern for public works crews and emergency management.
“Because of the extended cold
temperatures, some roads will be snow- or ice-covered much of the week,”
said Vince Jones, Atlantic County’s emergency management director.
“Icing conditions, especially on secondary roads, is always a concern,
primarily when it’s dark and you can’t see the ice.”
While temperatures are expected
to remain below freezing all week, roads will see some gradual melting
each day and will refreeze at night.
That creates hazards for drivers and pedestrians.
“Hospitals are preparing for an
increase in slip-and-fall cases due to ice and snow as well as
frostbite,” Jones said. “A long stretch of extreme cold with snow and
ice on the ground always leads to a spike.”
