Fatal accident second tragedy in year for Buster Clements' family

Erick “Buster” Clements, the Mullica Township man who was hit by a car and killed Thursday afternoon while walking in Egg Harbor City, had two grandchildren who were everything to him, family members said.
His death is the second tragedy in a year the two youngsters have suffered, said Buster Clements’ wife, Kimberly, on Monday.
Antonio Padilla, 8 and Jonathan Padilla, 5, lost stepfather Shane Gerson, 28, to a car accident on Duerer Street in Galloway Township last February, she said.
“They lost two of the most important people in their lives,” she said. “It’s been a rough year.”
The two attend Mullica Township Elementary School, she said.
Buster Clements supported his family through his Social Security check and now his family faces a financial struggle.
“My husband was on SSI (Supplemental Security Income). We don’t have money,” said Kimberly, who said she has medical issues and cannot work. “Thank God for friends in Hammonton who are helping me cover a lot of expenses.”
Kimberly Clements’ daughter Areina Harris, of Mullica Township, who is the mom of Antonio and Jonathan, has set up a donation account to help his family at gofundme.com/RIPBUSTER.
“People are calling me that I didn’t even know he knew,” Kimberly Clements said. “He was very loved.”
He was often seen walking in Hammonton and Egg Harbor City, and people knew him by his friendly manner.
She said she and Buster first met in elementary school in Mullica, where Buster attended for a couple of years, even though he grew up in Hammonton.
They lost contact for years, but about 17 years ago she went went to a bar in Hammonton called Tycoon’s and met him again, she said.
“We started going out and have been together ever since,” she said, adding he helped her raise her four children. They married two years ago.
“I never thought at age 41 I’d be a widow,” Kimberly Clements said. “Never thought it in a million years.”
Friend John Scola of Hammonton said Buster Clements was like a town icon, and had been almost adopted by the community. Parents would drive him to football games, and residents would offer to drive him to his destination when they would see him walking around town.
“Buster never had anyting but the shirt on his back and a smile,” Scola said Monday. “It just sunk all our hearts when he got hit.”
Kimberly Clements said she has not yet talked to Egg Harbor City Police about the accident, which happened at Philadelphia Avenue and Esslair Street. He was hit by a car driven by Jeanne Weinberger, 63, of Mullica Township, police said. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Unit is investigating, and no charges have been filed.
“I don’t want to know all the details yet,” she said. “I’m not ready for that.”
