EZ Pass Email Scam

News 12 New Jersey first reported on the E-ZPass phishing scam in August, but based on viewer emails, it seems to be reaching a growing number of people. Recipients get an email, claiming to be from E-ZPass, claiming they “have not paid for driving on a toll road. This invoice is sent repeatedly: “Please service your debt in the shortest possible time." The email contains a link that can supposedly be used to download the invoice, but that really contains a virus that can harvest sensitive information from a computer.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey advises people who receive the email to delete it. The agency says drivers who go through an E-ZPass lane without paying will receive letters via U.S. Mail, including photos of their vehicles and license plates. Customers that fail to pay their bills may eventually be sent to collection, but even then, they should be contacted by snail mail rather than email.
