When school opens in September, nine Atlantic County school districts will have new leaders.
But
fewer than half of them will be full-time contracted superintendents.
The remaining will be interims, retired superintendents paid by the day
to run the district until a permanent replacement is hired.
With
no tenure, contracts limited to a maximum of five years and a salary
cap based on enrollment, the job of superintendent has become
increasingly short-term. The gap has given rise to a new species, the
interim superintendent, a retired school administrator who is allowed to
work on a short-term basis.
Pleasantville, Northfield, Somers Point and Mainland Regional have hired interim superintendents. Mullica Township interviewed four candidates last week for an interim superintendent to replace Brenda Harring-Marro, who is leaving to become a principal in Waterford Township, Camden County.
