We moved back up here from Florida two years ago after eight years to be near our grandchild.
Just before coming back, I got into photography. I had wanted to get into photography at age 17, but when I went into the Air Force, they wouldn't let me have that career field.
I made it a hobby instead, doing my own developing and printing.
I got an accounting degree in college and worked in health care finance most of my life. Now that I'm retired, I can do the photography I've always wanted.
I started in Florida with photos of beautiful scenes, and I'd put mottos on them and sell them at church bazaars.
Then I got into backyard birds and shore birds. I'm so amazed at how much good birding there is in South Jersey.
I have a large collection of bird photos, and I also do beach scenes, shore scenes and lighthouses.
I tried selling at the Mercado Market in Mays Landing while it operated and learned that people want to see local pictures. So if I'm showing in Sea Isle City, I want to show photos of Sea Isle City that people will want to have in their collection.
I'm taking pictures at all the shore communities, so when I do a craft show next, I'll have photos specific to various communities.
This summer I'm looking into having a small booth in the Tuckerton Emporium. I'm trying to put a stand with my photos in there.
People can contact me and I'll provide a directory of my photos. We'll also be doing quite a few shows in the fall.
I generally don't sell the photos framed, since people are very particular about a frame to match their furniture or whatever.
I give people a choice of whether the photo is matted or unmatted and have different sizes available in stock of most of my pictures.
I have an inventory of more than 400 photos. Some are on canvas. A matted 11 -by-14 photo, which fits a 16- by-20-inch frame, is $25. Eight-by- 10s matted are just $15.
I use mostly Canon equipment, a digital SLR with various lenses, depending on what I'm shooting.
I just joined a photography club in Vineland that's starting up. It's only had two meetings so far, but has 30 to 40 people.
