Mullica School Budget Presentation

The budget hearing will be 7 p.m. May 6, said Gfroehrer, who is also secretary to the Board of Education.
The proposed $10.1 million budget, up from $9.9 million last year, would raise about $3.5 million in a tax levy, up from $3.36 million last year. When $342,214 in debt service is included, the tax levy goes up to about $3.6 million, Gfroehrer said.

Last year’s total tax levy was also about $3.6 million, since it included almost $600,000 in debt service, she said. So the school tax rate will remain flat at about $1.248 per $100 valuation, for a school tax bill of $1,448 on the average home valued at $116,000.

The district expects an enrollment of 681 students, up from 632 last year, and to receive about $400,000 in tuition funds. Spending per pupil is predicted to fall to $13,603 from $13,620, according to the proposed budget.

The pre-K to 8 district received $5.35 million in state aid last year, and anticipates receiving about $5.37 million this year.

Gfroeher said the general fund budget is increasing in part due to an asbestos abatement project, and increases in the cost of employee benefits.

On April 8 township committee adopted a $5.5 million 2014 municipal budget that raises the local tax rate by 3.5 cents to just less than $1.17 per $100 of assessed value, meaning the owner of the average home valued at about $116,000 would pay $1,356 in local-purpose taxes, up about $41 from last year.
