Batsto Forest Fire

Smoke could be seen from several different locations due to a forest fire that broke out in the Batsto area around 5:00 pm.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection the fire was initially 30 acres.

Authorities are still on the scene trying to put the fire out.

"The fire quickly grew in size. At this time it's about 1,500 acres and it is 30% contained. We don't even have a complete line around the entire fire at this point," said Michael Achey, Assistant Division Forest Fire Warden.

Officials are creating a fire line or perimeter which is a standard procedure to contain the fire from spreading.

The area where the fire broke out is a remote area making it difficult for officials to put it out.

"At the height of the fire we had 10 wild engines we call them, 2 air drop airplanes and one helicopter working the fire as well as some bulldozers, large track vehicles assisting us to put the fire out," Achey said.

So far the fire is not threatening any nearby structures and there are no injuries.

Officials say this is the season is known for fires.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
