Breaking News !

After listening to impassioned pleas from residents, educators and Mayor Jim Brown to put Kelly Mascio back in her classroom and bring some healing to the school and the community, The School Board refused to discuss the matter with the public and the Mascio matter was not even on the agenda.  The packed, standing room only crowd was shocked when the meeting was adjourned with no answers given to the community.

When almost half the room was cleared out, yelling could be heard in the library.  It was discovered that a Press OPRA request indicated that the Board certified  the tenure charges against Kelly Mascio LAST WEEK in a 8 to 1 vote.
A petition is being circulated to demand the resignation of  the Superintendent.

The MTEA would like to point out that according to the original statement Ms. Mascio gave, there is no mention of any child being "naked" or "having sex".  These inaccurate and inflammatory statements were never corrected by the administration - although repeatedly used for months - until this morning when the superintendent finally acknowledged that these statements were inaccurate.

The Mullica Township Education Association's full statement and Ms. Mascio's incident statement will be published here shortly.

The community was deceived by statements made by Brenda Harring-Marro to Fox 29 news in a published interview Monday, February 24th.  She stated she "cannot comment on the ongoing investigation but hopefully the matter will be resolved within days."  The community was under the impression that tonight's meeting would be the resolution.

She said this 6 days after she knew the secret 8 - 1 vote was taken on February 18th to certify the charge which would bring the issue before a state arbitrator to decide if Mascio can be fired.

Mullica Township BOE Update:

The library was filled with residents of our community tonight and so was the hallway leading to it. The mood of the people just before the meeting start was positive and upbeat. The family of Ms. Mascio were present but she under advice from her attorney was not.The news media was very well represented at the meeting as was the Mayor and several council members.

When the meeting started the BOE made it very clear while being recorded that they were not going to discuss the matter tonight as it was not on their agenda. This upset the citizens of the community, but they acted professionally and respectfully and waited their turn to speak at the end.

A number of community leaders both past and present spoke and well as the public. The thing that stuck me the most was the entire board including the Superintendent listen and seem to be concerned at what the speakers were saying, but BOE attorney Will Donio would not look at any of the speakers and seemed to care less what each had to say. I asked several people after the meeting if they noticed what I saw and they confirmed what I saw as well.

One person at the end asked them to present the facts to end this all, the attorney said that Ms. Mascio had received her charges and has responded and was given the opportunity to come to the school board meeting tonight and address the charges. Members of her family disagreed with that statement.

After the meeting ended I was informed by a reliable source that the BOE voted last week in a vote of 8-1 to terminate Ms. Mascio. The cowards that the BOE are knew of this before tonights meeting buy never let on of their decision.

This act by the Mullica Township BOE will surely cost the taxpayers of this community a great deal. Even the Mayor asked each member to go home and look in the mirror.

The literature that was passed around at the meeting clearly spells out what happened here. The teacher never said in her report that the kids were naked or having sex. This was all fabricated by the Principal Mr. Mazzoni and the BOE knew this and has done nothing to this person.

Thanks Gadfly for your ongoing information. Here we have a dedicated teacher of 15 years who thought she did all the right things being trashed and backstabbed . This is a human being who has a life and a family and a profession who is being thrown out in disgrace on charges it seems were greatly distorted for the benefit of the Boards weak argument. Add to this the result that the poor woman may be hindered from getting another job due to these charges> This decision will not only inflame the community but it is a decision that this Board will have to live with for the rest of their lives . Heaven help them for what they have done .
