IRS Scam Alert

EGG HARBOR TWP. - Egg Harbor Township Police say several residents have reported calls from the IRS, that are actually part of a scam.

The IRS scam works like this:

The caller, who claims to be from the IRS, tells the intended victim they owe taxes and must pay them using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.

The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation, or loss of their driver's license or business.

Police caution that the IRS will usually first contact people by mail, not by phone, about unpaid taxes.
.
And the IRS will not ask for payment over the phone.

If you are worried that you may have been a victim of this scam or if you get a similar call, you should report it to police immediately.
