DoJ Investigating Sen. Menendez

The Department of Justice is investigating N.J. Senator Robert Menendez (D) for his ties to William and Roberto Isaias, two fugitive bankers from Ecuador who are accused of absconding with $100 million and using their ill gotten gain to buy safe passage from Ecuador.
For years the Isaias brothers have been seeking permanent residence in the US.

Officials say Menendez made phone calls and wrote multiple letters to the State Department and the Dept. of Homeland Security in support of the brothers.
Investigators want to know whether the senator attempted to influence immigration officials in 2012 in exchange for campaign donations.

Federal election records show relatives of the Isaias brothers, who are residents, donated more than $10,000 to the senator's 2012 campaign.  Records show that the family of Roberto Isaias also donated at least $100,000 to the Democratic Party in 2012.

Menendez is also being investigated for his relationship with major campaign donor, Florida Eye Doctor Salomon Melgen.  Melgen is suing Medicare alleging that the agency has wrongly accused him of overbilling $8 million.
