Oxford House

Egg Harbor City residents hope to block a recovery house for recovering drug addicts and alcoholics which is a half block from Charles L. Spragg Elementary School.

EHC Solicitor Benjamin Brenner said the City Council has little power in the situation.
"From a strictly legal point, any action taken by the city to oppose Oxford House is unlikely to withstand a challenge", he said.  "You can't discriminate under the American with Disabilities Act".

"Oxford House's recovering alcoholics and drug addicts under the federal Fair Housing Act are treated the same as if a family" said Oxford House CEO Paul Molloy.  "They cannot be refused rental housing based on their being in recovery and there are no permits needed to organize an Oxford House home.".
