Elwood Volunteer Fire Company 10th Annual Golf Tournament Saturday, 10/08

The Elwood Volunteer Fire Company will be hosting their 10th annual Golf Tournament to benefit the EVFC and Gianna DeRosa, a 14 year old Mullica Resident this Saturday, October 8th at 8:30 AM.

Gianna De Rosa, a 14 yr. old athlete from Mullica Twp., had just finished leading her softball team in a state tournament before she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer. From shining on the mound to depending on a wheelchair, Gianna struggles with her everyday routine. When her brain tumor was removed in October 2010, she was left with minimal feeling and movement on the full left side of her body. After completing six weeks of radiation she continues with weekly chemotherapy at CHOP that will sustain until mid 2011.

The treatments leave her with severe fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, weak immune system, a side effect that gives her pins and needles and a clumsy right foot. Far from what a child should endure. Tony & Kathy De Rosa now face financial challenges with an insurance cap already met at 1.5 million and still climbing this year alone. They are responsible for 20%. Their daughter needs 24 hour care making it essential that her mother stop working lessening the household income. Some extra expenses extend from traveling costs, medical bills, Dr. co-pays, prescriptions, and physical therapy.

As Gianna continues her fight with strength, support, and the desire to play softball we are hopeful she will begin her high school journey and live her life as a typical teenager. Her long extensive recovery of treatments and physical therapy bring her prognosis from 30 to 93% allowing Gianna to dream big for a bright future.
