The NYC Islamic center (Mosque) should absolutely be built. The numerous protests against the construction of this Mosque are simply un-American. However, what is truly troubling is that we have elected officials (Republican and Democrat) speaking out against the construction of this mosque. What is it about this country, the sacrifice of our soldiers, the constitution and religious tolerance that these elected officials don't understand?
For this superhero, it is easy to dismiss the 20% of our population that are against the construction of this mosque. You see, these are the same 20% that are also birthers, think Obama is a Kenyan socialist, believe in aliens and think George Bush did a good job. But I hold elected officials to a higher standard. Elected officials who don't understand this are the same elected officials who have power to effect our liberties and freedoms. And that is what makes this superhero nervous. You see, by NOT building that mosque, we are compromising our values, showing the world our religious intolerance, giving into our fears and emotions - all while losing the same liberties and values that Xena, Warrior Princess, is so rightfully concerned about. What message have we already sent to the millions of Muslim Americans? Sixty Muslim Americans were killed on 9/11.......Sixty! What about all of the Muslims serving honorably in our military? Now there are calls for Muslims to be banned from our military. Many Americans are improperly equating Islam with radical terrorists. This is like equating Pat Robertson, Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart and Jerry Falwell with Christianity. It is simply not fair nor is it representative of the vast number of Muslims and Christians throughout the world. We HAVE to build that mosque!!!! We have to show the world that we are reclaiming our values, liberties and preserving our freedoms. The same freedoms that many Americans died to protect and preserve through our history. Blocking the construction of that mosque will be a victory for the radical terrorists because they will be successful in their quest to slowly destroy America......one freedom, one liberty and one right at a time.

I understand this intellectual argument for the Mosque but there's a highly charged emotional component you're not considering.
The World Trade Center site has become a shrine and a memorial of 911. This country was attacked and the muslims have been demonized for the last ten years on tv,radio,newspapers and magazines to keep public support of the wars.Bush pushed us into these unnecessary wars and our soldiers are still being killed by muslims everyday.
A lot of people are enraged by the thought of a Mosque at the 911 site. Some feel that it is a sign of victory for Islam and total disrespect for our victims.
The people are not opposing the building of the Mosque in another location.
The people have been taught to fear the "muslim terrorists" and now we're being told that there are no terrorists. It's hard to change a population's opinions overnight.

I don't think this controversy is about freedom of religion. This is a location dispute. How do you think our grandparents would have felt if the Japanese wanted to build a cultural center and temple on the Pearl Harbor site?

The location for the proposed mosque is two blocks away from ground zero. Two city blocks!!!! You clearly dont understand the "intellectual" argument, otherwise we would be in agreement and you too would be saddened. Have we not learned from our past? Just as Japanese Americans had their rights violated (do you recall our govt devastated lives and livlihoods by placing Japanese Americans in internment camps...for years!!! And for no other reason other than their eyes were shaped differently than ours) during WWII because of the color of their skin and the shape of their eyes, we now are faced with discriminating against another minority of Americans.
