Please vote "YES" to the Mullica School Budget

First off, I want to make a disclaimer that I am not an employee of the school district, related to an employee, board member nor have any affiliation with the school other than I am a parent with concerns.

Because of the state budget crisis, our school has lost $231,000 in state aid this year and $258,000 in state aid for next year.

Also, an important grant, $62,000, which supported the Latchkey program and counseling program, has been discontinued.

What will these cuts mean?
  •   The loss of 5 full time teaching positions
  •   The loss of a media specialist/librarian;
  •   Reduction of 7 teachers from full time to part time
  •   The loss of a special education teacher
  •   The loss of a remedial teacher
  •   The loss of 4 teachers aides
  •   The loss of a custodian
  •   The loss of two cafeteria staff members
  •   Reduction of music and physical education
  •   Reduction of two administrative positions
  •   The loss of one secretary
  •   Drastic reductions in after-school sports and activities
  •   Almost all field trips will be reduced
  •   Reductions in classroom supplies
  •   Reduction in textbook and computer purchases.

Mullica Is a Frugal District

Through efficiencies and shared services, the district saved $261,000 of taxpayer money to help offset the current crisis.

But the state raided that surplus and returned it to their coffers.

The school is asking for an increase of 2.2 cents which would mean an additional $3.86 a month to the average homeowner. Compared to other communities, this is a very modest increase.

We must act now and must pass our local school budget. Because the state has reduced their funding to our district we have to make up the difference.

If the school budget fails, the situation will be even worse and additional reduction of staff and programs is inevitable.

Please ask your friends, neighbors, and family members to vote "YES" in the school budget election today. The polls are open from 5:00 p.m. til 9:00 p.m. at the school.

Let me know if I am right. For $231,000 you can hire 5 full time teachers, a librarian, make 7 part time teachers full time, hire a special education teacher and a remedial teacher, a custodian, two cafeteria workers, two administrators, and a secretary.

These people must have been working for peanuts.

Can you imagine what will be in store next year when there is $37,000 more reduced?

If Mullica is so frugal and spends only around $12,000 per student instructionally. Then the employment losses of 14 full time instructors based upon the figures posted, at $12,000 per student, equates to each of the affected teachers only instructs 1.38 students. $231,000 / $12,000 = 19.25 students. 19.25 students / 14 teachers = 1.375

Something doesn't add up.
