Raccoon in Mullica Tests Positive for Rabies

A raccoon found near Moores and Chestnut Avenues last week has tested positive for rabies. Atlantic County health officials said the raccoon was found on 2/16 in the backyard of a residential property where the owners noticed it was having a difficult time walking and climbing.

Because it was displaying behavior was similar to that of a rabid skunk that was found previously on the property, the owner contacted local authorities, who captured the raccoon and sent it to the state lab for testing. Three days later, the tests came back positive.

No humans were exposed to the rabid raccoon, but the property owners' four outdoor cats will have to be confined for six months because they were not vaccinated.

The Township is offering a free rabies clinic on Saturday, March 20th from 10:00 AM til noon at the Public Works Building at Town Hall. The Atlantic County Animal Shelter also offers a free rabies clinic each month at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville. For more info on the monthly county clinic, call 485-2345.

Does any one know if the free town clinic gives the shots to cats?

I believe it is one type of rabies shot, usually used for canines, but they do give the shots to cats also.

Some vet's offices say this can be bad for cats, however I don't know anything about this. It certainly is a better alternative than six outdoor cats having to now be quarantined for 6 months.

The problem becomes rounding up all the outdoor cats on rabies shots day. Maybe it should be done over two days.
