STIMULUS MONEY/ATLANTIC COUNTY

Ms Chasy has some wrong information - I have not investigated what is available for Atlantic county but I did read that McGuire in Atlantic County and the Air national Guard did receive stimulus monies - also a school received funds. I find it difficult to believe that North Jersey got 95 per cent of the funds. Perhaps someone should look into how one applies for funds.

I believe McGuire is in Burlington County, however your point is well taken, Burlington County is definitely not North Jersey.

Thank you for your interest. I am hoping that Ms. Chasey's full statement about the funds will clear things up for you.

"Dawn,TJ and Pete sat through a presentation for the Federal Stimulus money and the bottom line is there is really nothing out there for us. It's 787 million dollars in Federal Stimulus money and 3.2% of that overall comes to programs in N.J.. 7 million from tax supported elements directly to New jersey's people, that's the N.J. income tax. Whether you paid less,I guess, depending on your income and the other primary amount of money goes to social service elements, such as Medicare and things of that nature.
So unless we have infrastructure, most of the money is going to urban areas and that's the bottom line. And most of the money is going to North Jersey and Atlantic County didn't get any on the County level. Something like 95% went to North Jersey and the other 5% went to South Jersey. We got very little and thats the extent of it."

Ms. Chasey received her information from a Government meeting set up to explain the disbursement of the money.
I hope this has been helpful.

Much of the stimulus money is to be used for transportation improvements so it makes sense that most of it will be spent where the need is most acute and where population centers are located. That being said, it includes extending PATCO to Williamstown and Vineland, where the population is growing significantly, connecting the Atlantic City line to the River Line in Pennsauken and making improvements on the entire length of the Atlantic City line. Galloway and EHC are also trying to get stimulus money for rail service.

Isn't Mullica applying for an extra police officer who would be initially paid for with federal stimulus money?

The federal stimulus money is billions, not millions. Much of it is federal income tax relief, not state income tax relief, leaving NJ about $10 billion to spend on health care, transportation, affordable housing, energy efficiency and other items. NJ is building a $8.7 billion dollar train tunnel to Manhattan and a lot of the money is going there.
